Why stubborn fat resists diet and exercise

Where your body stores fat is strongly influenced by genetics, hormones, age and sex. Certain depots — the lower abdomen, flanks, inner thighs, submental (under-chin) area — have more of the receptors that favour fat storage and fewer that favour release. That’s why these areas can persist even when your weight and body-fat percentage are otherwise good. Non-surgical contouring targets these specific depots directly.

The honest starting point

Body-contouring devices reduce a fat layer in a defined area. They don’t lower your overall weight and won’t compensate for weight gain. The best candidates are already close to their goal and want to refine one or two areas.

How truSculpt iD works

truSculpt iD delivers monopolar radiofrequency energy through hands-free applicators placed on the skin. The energy heats the full thickness of the fat layer to around 45°C and holds it there. Sustained heat at that level causes apoptosis — programmed death of fat cells — without harming skin or surrounding tissue. Over the following two to three months, the body’s immune system gradually clears the damaged cells and the fat layer thins. The same heat also stimulates a mild dermal collagen response, which can modestly firm the skin.

~24% average reduction in the treated fat layer thickness reported in clinical studies of truSculpt iD, measured by ultrasound at 12 weeks.

Device choice depends on the area, fat character, whether skin laxity is a concern, and your comfort preferences.

Areas it treats well

  • Lower and upper abdomen — the most requested area
  • Flanks / “love handles”
  • Inner and outer thighs
  • Submental fat (under the chin)
  • Bra line and back rolls
  • Upper arms — modest fat reduction with some skin firming

The treatment experience

  1. Assessment & markup

Your practitioner confirms suitability, photographs the area and marks the treatment zones.

  2. Applicators placed

Up to six flat applicators are secured against the skin with a strap. No vacuum, no needles.

  3. Heating phase

The area warms over a few minutes to a therapeutic temperature and stays there. Most people find it relaxing — like a warm stone pressed on the skin. 15 minutes for the chin, up to 45 for a large abdomen.

  4. Straight back to your day

Mild redness and warmth for an hour or two; occasionally slight tenderness or small firm areas for a few days. No downtime.

  5. Second session (if planned)

Usually 4–6 weeks later for the same area.

Nothing changes on the day. The fat layer thins gradually as the body clears the damaged cells, with most of the change visible by 12 weeks and settling by 16. A second session adds a further reduction on top. Results are effectively permanent for the cleared cells — provided your weight stays stable, since the remaining fat cells can still expand.

Safety and who shouldn’t have it

Not suitable if

You are pregnant or breastfeeding; you have an active implanted electronic device (e.g. pacemaker, defibrillator) or a metal implant in the treatment area; you have a hernia in the area to be treated; you have significant skin infection or open wounds locally; or you have certain connective-tissue or neurological conditions. A full history and examination are done before any treatment.

When performed correctly, side effects are limited to short-lived redness, warmth, mild swelling and occasional tender lumps that resolve within a couple of weeks. Burns and unevenness are very rare and relate to poor technique or unsuitable settings — another reason to choose an experienced, medically governed clinic.

Frequently asked questions

How much does truSculpt iD cost in Knightsbridge?

A single area for one session is roughly £500–£900 in London, or £900–£1,600 for a course of two. Treating two areas over two sessions is typically £1,600–£2,800. Under-chin treatment is a little lower. Your exact quote follows an assessment.

How much fat will I lose?

Clinical studies report an average reduction of around 24% in the treated fat layer at 12 weeks after one treatment, measured by ultrasound. A second session adds further reduction. It’s a refinement of a specific area, not overall weight loss.

How is it different from fat freezing?

truSculpt iD heats fat with radiofrequency and works on non-pinchable fat, with a mild skin-tightening bonus and a warm, comfortable sensation. Fat freezing cools fat via a vacuum cup, needs pinchable fat, and carries a rare risk of paradoxical fat enlargement. The right choice depends on the area and your skin.

Is there any downtime?

None. Expect mild redness and warmth for an hour or two and occasionally slight tenderness or small firm areas for a few days. You can exercise and return to normal immediately.

How many sessions do I need?

Most areas are treated once or twice. Two sessions spaced four to six weeks apart give a more noticeable result. Very few areas need more than two.

When will I see results?

Gradually. The fat layer thins as your body clears the treated cells, with most of the change visible by 12 weeks and the final result around 16 weeks.

Are the results permanent?

The fat cells that are cleared don’t come back. However, the remaining fat cells can still enlarge if you gain weight, so a stable weight is what keeps the result looking its best.

Does it hurt?

Most people describe it as a warm, relaxing sensation similar to a hot-stone massage. There are no needles and no vacuum suction.

Can it tighten loose skin?

The radiofrequency heat also stimulates a mild collagen response in the skin, so some patients notice modest firming. For significant skin laxity, a dedicated skin-tightening treatment is more appropriate.

Who shouldn’t have truSculpt iD?

It’s not suitable during pregnancy or breastfeeding, or if you have an active implanted electronic device or a metal implant in the treatment area, a local hernia, or significant skin infection there. A full assessment checks this before treatment.
