What exosomes are

Exosomes are nanoscale vesicles released by cells as a communication system. They carry cargo — growth factors, messenger RNA, peptides, lipids — that instructs neighbouring cells to do things like proliferate, migrate to a wound, produce collagen, or dial down inflammation. In aesthetics, exosome preparations (often derived from stem cells, plant sources or platelets) are used to try to nudge skin cells toward a more active repair state.

Exosomes vs PRP vs growth-factor serums

PRP uses your own platelets and their growth factors. Growth-factor serums deliver a fixed set of proteins. Exosome preparations aim to deliver a broader signalling package in a form cells can take up. All three target skin quality; none add volume.

How an exosome facial is done

  1. Cleanse & numb

Skin is cleansed and a topical anaesthetic applied for 20–30 minutes.

  2. Create micro-channels

Microneedling, RF microneedling or a fractional laser creates thousands of temporary channels so the exosome preparation can reach the living skin.

  3. Apply the exosome preparation

The product is spread over the treated area and massaged in; a further layer is often left on as a mask.

  4. Soothe & protect

A calming serum and SPF finish the session. You leave with specific aftercare instructions for the next 48 hours.

24–48 hours typical social downtime — redness like a mild sunburn on day one, settling to pinkness and slight dryness.

What it realistically improves

Where exosome facials help — and where they don’t
ConcernRealistic benefit
Dullness, uneven textureGood — smoother, more radiant skin over a course
Dehydration, compromised barrierGood — improved hydration and resilience
Redness, post-procedure inflammationGood — calmer skin, faster recovery after microneedling/laser
Fine lines, early crepinessModest — some softening as skin quality improves
Post-acne marks, mild pigmentationModest — best combined with pigment-focused care
Deep wrinkles, laxity, volume lossMinimal — needs resurfacing, energy devices or injectables
Active acne, rosacea flaresNot a treatment — settle these first

What the evidence says (honestly)

Laboratory and animal studies show exosomes can influence fibroblast activity, collagen production and inflammation. Human clinical data in aesthetics is still limited — mostly small studies, split-face comparisons and case series, often showing improved recovery and skin-quality scores when exosomes are added to microneedling or laser. That’s encouraging but not the same as large, long-term trials.

Regulatory position in the UK

Exosome products are not licensed as injectable medicines in the UK, and injecting them is not an approved use. Responsible clinics apply them topically to freshly micro-channelled skin and are transparent about the product’s source, processing and evidence base. Be cautious of clinics making cure-all claims or offering injected exosomes.

Results and timeline

When improvement becomes visible (illustrative)
Week 1 %~15% Week 4 %~45% Week 8 %~80% Week 12 %Full

Illustrative share of the final visible improvement typically present at each point after a full course of three sessions.

The first few days bring a temporary “glow” as skin recovers. The meaningful change — texture, tone, resilience — builds over 6–12 weeks as the repair response plays out, and is maintained with a session every 3–6 months or by pairing with an ongoing microneedling schedule.

Downtime and aftercare

  1. Leave the skin bare for the first night; use only the products provided.
  2. No make-up for 24 hours; mineral only after that.
  3. No exercise, saunas, steam or swimming for 48 hours.
  4. Pause retinoids, acids and scrubs for 3–5 days.
  5. Strict SPF 50 and no direct sun for a week.
  6. Expect mild dryness and flaking around days 2–4 — moisturise, don’t pick.

Frequently asked questions

How much does an exosome facial cost in Knightsbridge?

A single session with microneedling is roughly £300–£600 in London, and a course of three is £850–£1,600. Added on to RF microneedling or laser it’s typically £150–£350 on top of the base treatment.

What does an exosome facial actually do?

It aims to amplify your skin’s repair response after a micro-channelling treatment, improving texture, hydration, radiance and redness, and speeding recovery. It does not add volume, lift the face or remove deep wrinkles.

How many sessions do I need?

Three sessions two to four weeks apart is standard, with results building over 6–12 weeks. Maintenance is a session every three to six months, or pairing exosomes with an ongoing microneedling schedule.

Is it safe? Is it legal in the UK?

Topical application onto micro-channelled skin, using a traceable medical-grade product, is how reputable clinics use exosomes. Exosome products are not licensed as injectable medicines in the UK and injecting them is not an approved use — avoid any clinic offering injected exosomes.

Is there strong evidence it works?

Evidence is early. Laboratory and small clinical studies show improved skin-quality scores and faster recovery when exosomes are combined with microneedling or laser, but there are no large long-term trials yet. It’s best described as promising skin-quality support.

How is it different from polynucleotides?

Polynucleotides are injected DNA fragments with a better-established role in skin repair, hydration and elasticity, including the under-eye area. Exosome facials are applied topically after micro-channelling and lean toward radiance, calming and recovery. They can be used in the same overall plan.

How is it different from PRP?

PRP uses growth factors concentrated from your own blood. Exosome preparations deliver an external signalling package. Both target skin quality via microneedling; PRP has a longer track record, exosomes are newer and more convenient (no blood draw).

What’s the downtime?

Usually 24–48 hours: sunburn-like redness on day one, then pinkness and mild dryness or flaking around days two to four. Make-up after 24 hours, no exercise or heat for 48 hours, strict SPF for a week.

Can I have it while pregnant or breastfeeding?

No. As with most injectable and micro-channelling aesthetic treatments, it’s not offered during pregnancy or breastfeeding due to limited safety data.

Will one facial make a difference?

You’ll often see a short-lived glow, but the lasting texture and tone benefits come from completing a course and protecting the skin from sun afterwards.
